Antioxidants are phytochemicals (see ‘Phytochemicals (Phytonutrients) – the truth’ article), vitamins and other nutrients that protect our cells against Free Radicals damages by bolstering our body’s defences. Cells, found in our body, have a natural defence mechanism in place against free radicals and are able to repair most of the damages; however, Antioxidants reinforce this protection (see‘Free Radicals – the truth’ article).
Antioxidants can be found in most fruits and vegetables, however, they are found in large quantities in culinary herbs (see ‘Coriander (Cilantro)’ article) and medicinal herbs. Eating foods that are good sources of Vitamin A and C, such as all fruits (including berries) and vegetables, and Vitamin E which is found in foods including wheat germ, nuts, and seeds. Good sources of Selenium include seafood, meat, and cereals.
